Balvicar is a small hamlet situated 15 miles from Oban through some breathtaking scenery. It has its own excellent licensed general store and Post Office, where you can get fresh local produce and also hire DVDs for lazy evenings inside. Golf clubs can also be hired from here, if you decide to try out the coastal 9 hole golf course just on our doorstep which has views over Balvicar Bay.

The nearby islands of Luing (pronounced Ling) and Easdale provide a variety of interests. Easdale is a picturesque conservation area with several craft shops including the Highland Arts Exhibition where a truly highland welcome awaits you. The beautiful nearby gardens of An Cala are worth seeing for the surprisingly wide variety of flora.

Seafari

Seafari departs from the southern tip of Seil. This is a popular high speed rib boat trip which visits the gulf of Corryvreckan, the world's third largest whirlpool. It is not unusual to see porpoises and eagles during the 2 hour trip.

Luing can be reached by a short ferry trip across the fast tidal stream of Cuan Sound. Excursions can be made from here to Belnahua, Scarba and the Isles of the Sea.

Brewery

From Easter 2005, a new micro brewery will be opening on the island, just two miles away from the site. The Gascoignes will welcome you with selection of their own lager and real ales, including the renowned "Old Tosser" ale, and the attached restaurant will offer a wide range of freshly prepared dishes. There are two other restaurants on the island, or you could sample some delicious home cooking from our resident chef in Balvicar, who will deliver scrumptious creations direct to your chalet. Oban

Oban itself is a bustling town with plenty of attractions. Its coastal location is steeped in history, and today it remains the Gateway to the Isles. Ferries are available from here to Staffa (including Fingal's Cave), historic and spiritual Iona, and Mull, where a visit to colourful Tobermory (better known to our younger guests as Balamory!) is worthwhile.

Oban also has its own distillery which offers guided tours through the production process including a wee dram at the finish! A trip up McCaig's tower rewards the climber with spectacular views across the islands and surrounding area. A visit to one of Oban's numerous cafes or bistros is certainly recommended after this! Especially noteworthy is Julie's coffee shop located opposite the entrance to the distillery, where fresh home baking is just irresistible!

Things to see and do

For the active, Oban also offers an 18 hole golf course. The leisure centre has two swimming pools complete with water flume, tennis courts and a climbing wall. Oban Zoo and Rare Breeds Farm are popular with our younger visitors, and the Sealife Centre just north of Oban offers a fascinating insight into the local marine environment, including close up encounters with seals, otters and seahorses.

There is as much or as little to during your stay with us as you like!
